Beeley

A pretty village on the Chatsworth estate with some fine stone built houses and leafy lanes.

6 miles north of Matlock, at the southern end of Chatsworth Park, Beeley was originally a village for workers employed on the estate and many residents still work there. The village is set bellow Beeley Moor and there are wonderful views over the river Derwent to Lindop Wood and Stanton Moor. The village has some narrow lanes that wander about amongst a delightful mixture of stone cottages and ancient trees. St Anne's church is especially beautiful in spring, when daffodils surround it. Beeley Brook runs down the village from Hell Bank to a fine old inn, inevitably called the Devonshire Arms.

Things to do; The splendours of Chatsworth are close by and the walk along the riverside fields to Beeley Bridge and through the park to the House is popular. A good route runs up to Beeley Moor, and the Bronze Age barrow called Hob Hurst's House, passing the waterfalls in Hell Bank Plantation. The Derwent Valley Heritage Trail passes nearby.
