Tapton lock visitor centre
The Chesterfield Canal is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful and varied waterways in England.
It runs for 46 miles from the River Trent to the middle of Chesterfield, linking Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
Every yard of the canal can be walked on the towpath known as The Cuckoo Way.
It goes through tranquil countryside where scarcely a house can be seen; has some of the earliest staircase locks ever built (240 years ago); is hugely popular with walkers; has some of the best canal fishing in the country and ends up at what will be the £310 million Waterside development in Chesterfield.
The John Varley runs trips from Tapton Lock, on the Tesco roundabout in Chesterfield. When the John Varley is in the lock, boarding is level with the towpath which, together with the boat's wheelchair lift means the boat is suitable for less mobile guests.
Cruising the five miles of waterway from Chesterfield to Staveley, guests are able to see at first hand the high quality of the restoration that has been carried out on this stretch of the canal and experience the local flora and fauna.

Disabled toilets are available in the Tapton Visitor Centre and the Nona’s café at the Hollingwood Hub.
Level access is available along the full length of the canal but, where there is a canal lock or a junction with a road, there tends to be some sloping sections which are generally manageable.
There are a number of access points along the canal. The best being Tapton Lock, Hollingwood Hub and Brimington Wharf.
