Community Transport

Community Transport

Community transport operates across the county providing a variety of services to meet every need and all vehicles are wheelchair accessible.  It enables people who are unable to use public transport to get out and about and make journeys most people take for granted. It also provides transport for groups who wish to enhance community activities

Community transport provides its invaluable services throughout the U.K. The short video below showcases the services provided in East Sussex and gives a great overall  introduction to Community Transport. Some of the specific services provided in Derbyshire are listed below.

Services provided in Derbyshire  include

Dial-a-Bus
A 'door to town' shopping bus service, for individuals who experience difficulties with using public transport or where there is no public transport available.  Fares are in line with public transport rates and there is a flat-rate fare of £1 per journey (£2 return) for Gold Card holders.

Group transport
This is a service available to community groups involved with community activities, such as scouts, schools, luncheon clubs and church groups.

Trips and excursions
Some of the community transport schemes in Derbyshire run trips and excursions throughout the year to places of interest, such as garden centres, Christmas lights and
larger towns, either within the county or further afield.

aCTive travel
This is a door-to-door service catering for individual needs and is primarily for getting to health appointments and improving people's quality of life by assisting them to get to places they wouldn't otherwise be able to access.  Either a small, wheelchair accessible vehicle, or a volunteer using their own car, will be used depending on a passengers mobility.

Funding
In 2012 - 2013 each of Derbyshire's seven community transport schemes received a share of a £1.491 million grant from the county council to help with day-to-day running costs. This was followed by another cash boost  in the form of a £446,582 grant for community transport from the Department of Transport.

A number of Community Transport Schemes operate in and around the Peak District including the 'Scenic Derbyshire Tours' which runs from May to October.  The route runs around the Peak District with fully accessible 16-seat vehicles which can accommodate wheelchair passengers. These services are open to local elderly and/or disabled residents and to visitors to the area.  All of the schemes are registered charities and are under contract to Derbyshire County Council to provide Dial-a-Bus and Group Hire services.
