Sir Richard Arkwright’s 1783 Masson Mills at Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, England, are the finest surviving and best preserved example of an Arkwright cotton mill. Here you will find a working textile museum illustrating Arkwright’s legacy plus a  shopping village, restaurant, conference centre and onsite parking facilities.

The working textile museum here houses a fascinating collection of authentic historic textile machinery dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. In 2010 the collection was described as “possibly the UK’s finest collection of working textile machines” and includes machinery originally from Masson Mills, along with a large collection of other items and artefacts from textile mills all over Britain.

Visitors to the museum can experience the genuine atmosphere of a working 18th century cotton mill in the original 1783 Masson Mill – the sights, the smells and the sounds are authentic and evocative. At Masson Mills there is a palpable sense of the continuity of enterprise. After “clocking in” with their entrance tickets, visitors “step back in time” on entering the old mill. Here you can see and appreciate Sir Richard Arkwright’s Legacy of over 200 years of industrial history.

Masson Mills Shopping Village adjoins the Textile museum and really is a unique shopping experience with sixty different retail concepts set over five floors, all under one roof. - with designer clothes, jewellery, lingerie, golf, gifts, beer, whisky and food, ladies and men's clothing from The Edinburgh Woollen Mill and much more. You could say that this is 'City centre shopping without the city'.

And when you fancy a break the Derwent Restaurant is there to tempt you with its choice of hot and cold meals plus home baked cakes or scones including the now locally famous Tea for Two: a three-tiered cake stand with a selection of freshly made sandwiches with salad, freshly baked scones with jam and cream , cupcakes and tea or filtered coffee all for only £8.95. If you can’t finish it all, you can take it home!
