Accessible Derbyshire was launched as a registered charity in February 2014 with the aim of improving the lives of disabled people, their families, friends and carers living in or visiting Derbyshire and the Peak District. Here are just a few of the things we've been up to so far.......

So why did we set up our charity?

Take two Derbyshire women with six kids between them, three with disabilities: mix in a love of fundraising, a generous helping of local knowledge and the zest for making the most of life, stir well and what do you have? The perfect recipe for Accessible Derbyshire!

We are Gillian Scotford and Jane Carver. Welcome to our website. We’re pleased to meet you!

Ever looked forward to a day out only to find that the place you want to visit isn’t really wheelchair accessible?
We’ve been there……!

Ever fancied a holiday but can’t find anywhere with the right facilities to overcome the disabilities you are coping with?
We’ve done that……!

Ever had to change the person you care for on a toilet floor while you’re out because there is nowhere else?
We’ve bought the T-shirt…….!

Wouldn’t it be so much easier if someone could tell you what’s available out there: what’s accessible and what isn’t for instance, in advance? A friend with just the right know-how?
That’s the aim of our website.

We want Accessible Derbyshire to be your new ‘best buddy’: someone you can call on just when you need them to help you make the best of all that our beautiful county has to offer.
On our site, you won’t find any old café, hotel or attraction. We have selected some of the best that Derbyshire has to offer - a selection of our favourite places: some with beautiful views, some with interesting things to see and do, some with scrumptious food to suit a range of budgets and tastes and all with a warm and friendly welcome. And if you think differently: tell us!

We’ll also tell you where the Changing Places toilets are in Derbyshire: special  facilities where someone can be changed in comfort and dignity meaning that everyone can enjoy a full day out and about.

And, having years of Caring experience ourselves, we want to support Carers by funding additional respite services and providing well-deserved breaks. (Yes, we know you’ll probably spend the time sleeping but that’s okay!)

What you see on our site is just the beginning. Our aim is for Accessible Derbyshire to grow and we’d love your help!

If you have a favourite walk, cafe, restaurant, hotel or place to visit that has level access please tell us about it! Or if you’d like to help raise funds please get in touch: we have a ‘wish-list’ telling you about the current projects we are supporting on our ‘fund-raising’ page.

We live in a beautiful county. Together we can make the ‘great outdoors’ great for everyone.

Thanks for reading. If you want to get to know us a little better, have a look at our ‘about us’ section. In the meantime, it’s been great meeting you!

Best wishes,

Gillian and Jane.
